Data Sources

Transparency matters. Here’s where Intrinsic Investor gets its data and how to interpret it.

Quotes & market data

Yahoo Finance (via the yahoo-finance2 client) is our primary source for end-of-day quotes, basic fundamentals, and historical prices across global equities. Coverage is broadest for US listings; international tickers occasionally have missing fields.

Fundamentals & financial statements

We combine multiple providers to fill gaps in any single source:

  • SEC EDGAR — primary source for US 10-K, 10-Q, 8-K filings; canonical for US balance sheet, income statement, and cash flow data.
  • Financial Modeling Prep (FMP) — fallback source for fundamentals when Yahoo is rate-limited; also used for analyst estimates.
  • Finnhub — insider transactions, earnings calendar, and recommendation trends.
  • Twelve Data — secondary source for balance sheet data and international coverage gaps.

Macroeconomic data

FRED (Federal Reserve Economic Data) supplies risk-free rates, treasury yields, inflation series, and other macro inputs used by the DCF and CAPM cost-of-equity calculations. When FRED is unavailable, the app falls back to documented constants.

Brokerage & execution

Alpaca is used for paper-trading and (optionally) live execution when a user connects their account. We do not custody funds. Trade data lives in your Alpaca account.

Caching & freshness

We cache responses to stay within free-tier and rate limits. Stock pages revalidate every 5 minutes; macro and educational pages revalidate daily. Live status: /api/ai/freshness.

Limitations

  • Quotes are end-of-day, not real-time. If you need millisecond pricing, use a broker terminal.
  • Fundamentals can lag filings by hours to days, depending on which provider returns the field first.
  • International tickers sometimes have missing fields where US listings would have them.
  • Valuation outputs are model estimates that depend on assumptions; see /methodology for inputs and weightings.
  • Where a metric is missing from all providers, the field shows as — rather than guessing.
